45 Trapped Overnight On High Altitude Gondola

Published : 09-Sep-2016 07:50

A rescue operation has just resumed to rescue 45 people trapped overnight on one of the world's highest gondolas.

The lifts which are used by summer sightseers to get a close up view of Mont Blanc cross the Vallee Blanche glacier, home of the famous Vallee Blanche ski run, run from the top station of the Aiguille du Midi in France.

The cables on the lift are reported to have become tangled for 'unknown reasons' with initial speculation including a freak gust of wind.

Yesterday rescue helicopters from France, Italy and Switzerland rescued 65 people of 110 that were trapped opn the lifts and then when the operation had to be postponed as darkness fell rescue workers spent the night with trapped passengers, providing blankets and energy bars.
