Ski resorts have opened for the 2016-17 ski season in four countries in the past 24 hours.

First up was Arapahoe Basin in Colorado, USA, pictured above, which opened yesterday.

It's the first area in North America to open for winter 2016-17 with a mix of natural and machine made snow.
Its ski area is one of the world's 10 highest and typically has an eight month ski season through to June.

In Europe Kitzbuhel has become the first ski area without a glacier to open for the season, on its Pass Thurn slopes, this despite being one of the continent's lowest altitude major ski areas.

In France les 2 Alpes has also opened, the second French area to do so after Tignes at the start of the month, although it will only open for 10 days before closing again for five weeks until the start of December.

The Diavolezza Glacier near St Moritz in Switzerland is also scheduled to open for the season today.
