Snow Forecast For The Pyrenees

Snow Forecast For The Pyrenees

Published : 07-Jan-2017 03:29

Recent snow storms in Europe have brought up to three feet/90cm of new snow to some areas, although others have not yet fared so well.

Among the biggest winners have been ski areas in the Czech Republic, Austria and Bavaria, but some ski areas in Eastern Switzerland like Davos and Arosa have had up to 50cm of snow. Further West in Western Switzerland and the French Alps it has been more like 10-20cm so far.

Some areas that could really do with fresh snow including the Dolomites and Pyrenees have seen little or nothing yet but that looks set to change early next week, in the Pyrenees at least, if short-term forecasts deliver snow as predicted.

Ski areas on the Spanish side are forecast to receive around 30cm/a foot of snow over Monday/Tuesday And ski areas in Andorra a similar volume slightly later, more Tuesday/Wednesday, with the snowfall then continuing on in to the French Pyrenees.

Like most ski areas in Europe Pyrenean ski areas have been able to keep a lot of terrain open, thanks to snowmaking, but there's been almost no off piste. Lower slope bases are in the 5-30cm bracket, upper runs 30-60cm, although unlike most of the Alps there was some snow in the Pyrenees (5-15cm) in the week before Christmas.

Grandvalira in Andorra, the biggest ski area in the Pyrenees with 210km of piste, is pictured above this morning.

Sadly there's no similar snow forecast in the Dolomites as yet, in what is so far a repeat of the past few seasons, but snowmaking means the vast majority of groomed trails are open here too.

Scotland is having perhaps the worst start to 2017 of all of Europe's ski regions with no snow left on mountains and no confirmed snow forecast, just the hope there may be some sometime the week after next.
