Snowiest January Ever Already At Mammoth Mountain
Published : 21-Jan-2017 07:48
After only 20 days Mammoth Mountain has announced that January 2017 has become its snowiest January ever with more than 15 feet (4.5 metres) of snow falling.
Mammoth, established by the legendary Dave McCoy 77 years ago (he is still going strong aged 101 although he sold the resort in 2005) set its monthly snowfall record of 209 inches (5.3 metres) in December 2010 so only needs 27" (67cm) more to break that record. There's 11 days left to do it and it's still snowing.
Mammoth currently has a 711cm snow base, by far the deepest in the world. It is rare for snow depth at any ski resort anywhere to reach 7 metres during as ski season and when it occasionally does it is usually in early March after snow has been falling for 3-5 months but before the spring thaw really starts.
