Riksgransen Opens For 2017

Published : 27-Feb-2017 09:34

Riksgransen Ski Area in northern Sweden has opened for its 2017 ski season.

Riksgransen has one of the most unusual ski seasons in the world, opening in late February each year, and then staying open to late June.

Located 200km north of the Arctic Circle it is located in a zone of perpetual darkness for more than two months around mid-winter when the sun stays down below the horizon so is too cold and dark to open when most other other resorts in the northern hemisphere do.

However from mid-May it is an area of 24 hour daylight and is famous for offer skiing and snowboarding under the midnight sun on several evenings each week and for staying open to mid-summers weekend in late June.

2017 marks 65 years since the first ski lift opened at Riksgransen, although there has been skiing here since 1928.

The resort starts its season with a 1.8m (six feet) base, temperature of -12C and 5cm of fresh snow in the last 24 hours.
