(Up to) A Foot (30cm) Of Fresh Snow in Austria

Published : 01-Mar-2017 08:54

Austria ski areas are reporting up to 30cm/a foot of fresh snow this morning after a snowy 24 hours. In many cases the snow is still falling meaning larger multi-day accumulations are likely.

Fresh snow has been reported across the country but Saalbach, Kaunertal, the Kitzsteinhorn (Kaprun) glacier and the Zillertal ski arena are amongst the resorts reporting the biggest accumulations of 30cm in the past 24 hours.

The snow is particularly welcome at lower elevation resorts like Mayrhofen (30cm in last 24 hours) which previously had no snow left at resort level.

It's the third snowfall in two weeks for Austrian ski areas, which have seen more fresh snow than most resorts further west in the past fortnight, although this time most other areas of the Alps are currently seeing significant snowfall too.

Lech received 26cm in the previous snowfall at the end of last week and with 15cm so far from the current snow storm has now received more than 40cm/16 inches of new snow in the past week.

The Kaunertal glacier (Pictured top yesterday) has the deepest snow base in Austria with a 2.8m (9 foot) base.
