Four Days of Powder Alarms in Norway

Four Days of Powder Alarms in Norway

Published : 17-Mar-2017 11:35

Whilst skiers in the Alps have enjoyed skiing under sunny skies, several Norwegian ski areas have been posting 'powder alarms' (for more than 20cm of new snow in 24 hours) daily.

Coastal Voss resort, famous for its powder, although not so much this season until now, has been receiving more than 20cm of fresh snow every day for the past four days straight and now says it has had 90cm/3 feet of fresh snow in total since last weekend.

Several other Norwegian ski areas including Bjorli and Meråker have reported similar big snowfalls, the latter 45cm since yesterday.

Scandinavian ski areas typically stay open to early May with Riksgransen in Northern Sweden open to midsummers day in late June.

Norway has three summer glacier areas, one of which, Folgefonn, also known as 'Fonna', has said it may open a fortnight early for the Easter weekend, if conditions are good.

The centre's management said this week that winter snow has been below average with only 45m of snow falling at 1100m of altitude this winter, but they expect the current snowstorms to bring them over 2m of snow in the next 10 days, dramatically improving conditions.
