Le Clusaz and Le Grand Bornand - December 17th 2008

Fierce Fohn winds last weekend stripped much of last weeks powder from the off-piste, but left superb, fast, piste skiing on a smooth base for Monday.Monday night brought a much better-than-forecast snowfall of 20-30cm of very light powder right down to the village. The Balme and Fernuy sectors of La Clusaz have been closed this week (preserving the snow for the Xmas trippers we assume) but there was plenty of boot-deep fluff to be had on Beauregard and top-to-bottom on l'Aiguille. With virtually no-one about there was still plenty of un-tracked snow on the lower runs by the time lunch came around.
Expecting good things, we headed for Le Chinaillon (Le Grand Bornand) for the afternoon and weren't disappointed - light powder all over everywhere so it didn't matter that half the ski area was shut here also. Too much snow, too little time...
Apparently the whole Chinaillon sector will open on Friday for the first time this season; firm base, fresh snow and cold temperatures promise to deliver... 8)
To cap it all my son (11) skiied the whole day in the powder with us - and we almost kept up with Gravite Dave and his orange trousers...
There are still places available in chalets out here for next week, so if you fancy swapping your tinsel for powder...
