Killington First to Open in North America’s East

Killington First to Open in North America’s East

Published : 08-Nov-2017 08:07

Killington in Vermont has announced it will open for the season later today at 9.30am EST.

The resort, the largest in the Eastern US, made the announcement of today's opening yesterday, shortly after two other ski areas in the region announced they'd be opening on Saturday.

Killington has a reputation for being the first in the East to open each ski season.

Conditions in Eastern North America have not been great for snowmaking with warm temperatures in October and Killington had to abandon an initial hope to open at the end of last month. Things have improved more recently though,
"The cold temperatures and ideal snowmaking weather have had our mountain operations team running full steam," said Mike Solimano, president and general manager of Killington Resort and Pico Mountain.

Killington plans to use their K-1 gondola and North Ridge Triple chairlift to access "…advanced terrain only, providing roughly 600 vertical feet of open trails. No beginner terrain is available at this time."

Wildcat Mountain in New Hampshire, Mount Snow in Vermont and Sunday River in Maine have all announced they will be opening for skiing and riding this Saturday, November 11, 2017.

It will be one of the earliest openings for Wildcat in the past decade and one of the earliest opening dates on record for Mount Snow.
"Wildcat has always been known for its early openings, and we're thrilled to continue the tradition," stated Brian Heon, general manager of Wildcat. "I can't wait to welcome back everyone as we kick off our 60th season here at Wildcat."
