Published : 31-Aug-2017 09:58
Forecasters are predicting up to 60cm of snowfall over the opening weekend of September in Australia and New Zealand.

One of the big beneficiaries is expected to be Mt Hutt, which has 50cm forecast, it currently has the deepest snow base in the world already, at 3.4m, over taking both Valle Nevado (2.9m) in Chile which had claimed 'deepest base in the southern hemisphere' for much of the 2017 season, and the Galdhoppigen glacier in Norway, on 3m, which had claimed the deepest snow base in the northern hemisphere/work before Mt Hutt over took it.

The Stelvio glacier is normally open from May to November, opening after the Italian Giro cycle race passes through the area in spring but this year the high temperatures known as Lucifer which have brought temperatures above 40C and reputedly as high as 55C to parts of southern Europe are reported to have made the ski slopes unusable.
