Major New Lift To Improve Italian-French Ski Region This Winter

La Thuile, the ski area on the Italian side of the French border which shares the Espace San Bernardo ski region with La Rosière in France, has confirmed a major lift upgrade should be completed ahead of winter 2026/2027.
The resort announced a €33.9 million investment in a new gondola that they intend to positively reshape access to La Thuile's upper slopes last year. Work on the Les Suches–Chaz Dura gondola, built with 10‑seat cabins and a maximum speed of 6 m/s, began last summer and is due fort completion this autumn. The lift will replace the ageing La Combe and Chaz Dura chairlifts, which have both been in service since the late 1980s.
Resort officials report that the new lift will offer a protected, weather‑proof route to one of the resort's key sectors, increasing comfort and reducing travel times while boosting capacity to as many as 3,000 passengers per hour. Resort officials say the project is central to improving flow toward the Col du Petit Saint‑Bernard and strengthening the cross‑border connection with La Rosière.
"By consolidating two older lines into a single modern gondola, La Thuile aims to deliver a more efficient and resilient backbone for both daily operations and peak‑season demand. Construction is scheduled to progress through summer 2026, with the lift expected to open for the start of the 2026/2027 winter season, marking one of the most significant infrastructure upgrades in the Aosta Valley in recent years," a resort spokesperson commented.
