Adaptive skiing sessions launched at Plymouth Snowsports Centre

Adaptive skiing sessions for disabled people are now available at Plymouth Snowsports Centre thanks to the Southern Ski Club for the Disabled.
Twelve instructors from the Plymouth centre took part in two recent training days delivered by a team from the Southern Ski Club for the Disabled, which is based at Knockhatch Ski Centre in East Sussex.
The Disability Awareness Skiing course means Plymouth Snowsports Centre can now offer sessions designed to be deaf, blind, visually impaired, deafblind, amputee and neurodivergent friendly.
Andy Mossford, Senior Instructor at Plymouth Snowsports Centre, said the training had given instructors greater confidence to support disabled skiers.
"The course provided by Southern Ski Club for the Disabled was incredibly inspiring. The knowledge and techniques we gained have given our instructors greater confidence to continue supporting disabled people we already welcome at our centre. As a family-friendly centre, we truly believe that skiing should be accessible to everyone."
The centre is also investigating the possibility of offering skiing for people with physical disabilities who require specialist equipment, including sitskis.
Ian Edwards, Chair of the Southern Ski Club for the Disabled, said the training was designed to give instructors the skills to work with skiers with a wide range of disabilities.
"Our course 'Disability Awareness Skiing' covered all disabilities, the obvious, hidden and multiple disabilities, so that skiing can be accessible for everyone in Plymouth."
