A couple of small ski areas in Eastern Switzerland are claiming to have received around three metres/10 feet of fresh snow in the past week.
Toggenburg says it has had 2.7m (nine feet) of snow and Les Maccots 3.5m (nearly 12 feet) in the same seven day period.
Swiss ski areas do dominate the top of the snow accumulation tables with Champery and Les Crosets on the Swiss side of the huge Portes du Soleil region (pictured above) reporting the most snow of international destination resorts at 1.7m (a few inches off six feet) since last weekend.
Amongst the other areas to report 1.5m/five feet or more of snow are more are Gstaad (1.65 metres), Adelboden (156cm) and Laax (150cm). Courmayeur in Italy also reports 1.67m of fresh snow.
However most areas have reported at least 60cm (two feet) of snow and many 1 to 1.5 metres making this the best start to a ski season for at least six years in most cases and some Swiss resorts are saying it's the best for 20 years – in other word, this century.
The snow and other weather extremes including strong winds and some temperature fluctuations does mean that the avalanche risk remains high off the groomed piste at many areas.
