Coronavirus Confusion on the Slopes
Published : 26-Feb-2020 11:52
Just how big a threat is Coronavirus (Covid 19) to skiers heading to (or back from) Italy, or indeed the wider Alps region?
There appears to be confusion over whether skiers should be concerned, and whether they should be doing anything; not helped by mainstream media reports of school parties returning from region going in to 'self-isolation' and having their schools 'deep-cleaned'.

French Pyrénées Road Trip: Cauterets, Grand Tourmalet, Pic du Midi
Published : 19-Feb-2020 07:05
Wanted to see if it was possible to take the kids on a ski trip at half-term without breaking the bank, so picked the unfashionable French Pyrénées, rather than the Alps. We flew to Toulouse on Monday which was our first success as flights were super-cheap (£50 each when I booked back in August), with the added bonus that we weren't flying on Saturday ex-LGW, when most flights were cancelled.

The problem skiers are having is getting on to it top ski or snowboard it, and for the five highland centres the battles include keeping the snow on the slopes and opening the lifts to access the slopes.

Strike Appears to Have Limited Impact In French Ski Resorts
Published : 16-Feb-2020 11:10
A strike by seasonal workers called by two unions and actively observed at around 50 French ski resorts appears to have had limited impact.
The unions are unhappy about new French government employment laws which makes it harder for seasonal workers to claim benefits by asking them to work longer before they can get them. In some cases unions say the term now required exceeds the length of the ski season, which is diminishing anyway, they say, due to climate change.

Macron Visits Vallee Blanche to Witness Climate Change in Action
Published : 13-Feb-2020 04:41
French president Emmanuelle Macron was in Chamonix today to visit the rapidly retreating Mer de Glace glacier, upon which the (sometimes) world's longest lift-accessed ski run, the famous Vallée Blanche, descends.
Unfortunately the full 20km descent, with a potential vertical descent of around 2,700m down from the Aiguille du Midi lift station at 3,842m all the way back down to Chamonix at 1,100m altitude is rarely skiable in full. It has not been possible to ski down to Chamonix this winter to date, the warmest so far in French history.
